Director Club Services Report

REPORT FOR GOVERNOR’S VISIT
23RD July, 2009.




Rotary Club of Colombo carries out its Service Projects through 4 main Service Committees. Community Services Committee

The Committee is chaired by Rtn.Mohammed Abidally and supported by the following.
Deputy Chairman Community Services – Rtn Shezad Careem
Secretary Community Services – Rtn Nihal Wickramanayake
Community Service Advisors – Rtns PP Derek Wijeyeratne and PP Asgi Akbarally.
The membership in the Committee is 33.

The Committee at its first meeting discussed and agreed on the following projects for the year.
:
1) Water/Sanitation –A water / sanitation project to a school in Kochikade.
2)Karapitiya Hospital – Matching Grant – This is a major project to provide medical, gynecological and maternity services at Mahamodera Hospital at Karapitiya, Galle.
3) Computers for Hikkaduwa Special School for English – Rotary Club of Wallington,
4) “Ragalla” Street Children’s Home - The funds for this project, to provide computers, are available from the Rotary Club of Hastings, U.K. The Home is run by Ms.Pene Gordon
5) Adopt a Village. – A team from our Club has already visited a village in Walapane together with an official of the Tea Leaf Trust for a feasibility study.
6) Jaipur Limbs – The committee decided to support this project by RC of Colombo
East by giving raw material to manufacture limbs.
7) Maternal Mortality Reduction – An offer from District 1120 (Kent and East Sussex) to carry out a project sponsored by the Royal College of Obs. and Gyn.
8) Drama Workshop at Kuda Kusum Orphanage– Rtn Mohammed has arranged with drama specialist Jerome de Silva to conduct the drama workshop free of cost.
9) IDP Relief and Assistance– The Club has already made a cash contribution of Rs. 500,000/- to the District for use of a bio gas unit and personal contributions from members amounting to Rs. 175,000/= has also been collected.
10) Ethnic Harmony Project – This is a project the Club had carried out very successfully on several occasions in the past.
11) Gift of Life Surgery –This project which was done successfully last year will
once again be repeated. The club identifies a poor child with heart disease and is sent to New Delhi for surgery.
12) Cancer Hospital Birthday Room - This project has been operating for the 4th year running. A b’day party for children in the wards is done on a monthly basis. This is a joint project with the New Generations Committee, Rotaract and Interact Clubs.
13) Safe Bottle Lamp Project – Whilst Funding is available from the World Bank,.
14) Surol –This again is a continuing project, where those afflicted with the dreaded disease leprosy, is provided assistance to start self employment projects.
15) Early Cancer Detection Centre - A free clinic to detect cancer is now being conducted by the Club at Narahenpita with basic facilities. The Club was able to obtain a block of land from the Health Ministry near the Narahepita/ Nawala Road junction to construct a fully equipped modern Cancer Detection and Screening Centre. The sub committee in charge of the project discussed this with Dialog Telekom, who, as their CSR project was looking for land to construct a multi storied building to treat hearing impaired children. They have now agreed to take over the land with the permission of the Ministry and construct the building and provide the RCC, 10,000 sq.ft. for the cancer project without any cost to the Club. An MOU has already been signed for the purpose. The proposed Construction is expected to commence soon.. The existing equipment at Narahenpita temporary clinic will be shifted to the new site and we propose approaching clubs overseas for the more sophisticated equipment.. The existing rented out building will continue till the new building is ready.

International Services Committee

This is a vibrant committee Chaired by Rtn. Aroshi Perera, with Rtn.Tehani Mathew as Deputy Chairman. The membership in the Committee is 31.

Advises PP Wind Comm. Noel Fernando and PP Asgi Akbarally.

Sister Clubs – The RCC has a strong Sister Club arrangement spanning 15 Clubs. There are a few new requests from others including a club in Israel which are keen to have such arrangements with us.
The Committee has communicated with all Sister Clubs for assistance towards IDP camps.
A strong team is expected to visit one Sister Club by October this year.

World Understanding Day – Several options to celebrate World Understanding day are being discussed and a final decision will be taken at the next meeting.

Visit by Past Governor Bill Boyd – The RCC intends facilitating the proposed visit with a grand function. This will be a joint project with three other Rotary Clubs. Expected participation of three to four hundred guests including a contingent of Rotarians from South India.

Environment Awareness Program – A program for school children is being arranged for which a faculty member from New Zealand is to be invited.

Inbound and outbound GSE Teams- Will host the inbound GSE Team this year too. Waiting for details regarding the outbound GSE Team.


New Generations Committee

The Chairman of this Committee is Rtn. Rajieve Fernando with Rtn. Samantha Rajapakse as Deputy Chairman, Rtn. Ranil Pieris as Secretary and PP Mahen Ambani and PP. Majid as advisors. The Committee membership is 20.

Orientation Seminar - A seminar on career guidance for school leavers to be held in September.

Interaction with Rotaractors and Interactors – The Committee intends arranging an evening with these two groups to create a better understanding of the Rotary Movement

Beach Cleanup – A beach cleanup at Kinross with the participation of Roteractors and Interactors is planned for November.

Youth Camp – An interactive youth camp, such as Outward Bound Programme is been planned.

Rotary Scout Troupe – The Club will revive and resurrect the relations with the scout troupe.

Leadership Training - A two day seminar for Rotaractors on Leadership to be arranged.


Vocational Services Committee.
Chaired by Rtn. K. Sounderajan with Rtn. Ranier Fernando as Deputy Chairman, PP. Kumar Nadeson and PP. Lucky de Alwis as advisors.

The committee membership is 19.

IT Career Guidance Fair - A similar project carried out last year by this Committee attracted over 1000 school children. This will be repeated this year too.

Micro Finance for Rural Women – Intends commencing this programme under RI approved scheme.

Adopt a Village – Will join up with Community Services Committee to look after vocational related aspects.

Mentoring/Social Etiquette – A programme to provide support to University students will be undertaken.

Computer Literacy Training – To provide training to youth in Chilaw and in Kurunegala under a SLANA programme.

Worksite Visits – As done last year, will arrange for students in the Commerce Classes in selected schools to visit factories and understand production and related aspects of an Industry.

English Teacher Training. – These programmes were done successfully in the past and the Committee intends reviving the programme to provide specialized training to English teachers.

Distribution of Library Books.- Subject to availability of funds library books will be donated to selected schools.

Service Committee Budgets.

Community Services - Rs. 1,000,000/-. This excludes available funds for continuing projects and also funds expected from donors, Matching Grants etc.

International Services – Rs. 250,000/-. If the faculty member from New Zealand does not materialize this figure would drop to around Rs.100,000/-.

New Generations – Rs.500,000/-.. The two day leadership seminar and the orientation programme will take up most of these funds.

Vocational Services – Rs. 200,000/-.

Continuing Projects.

- The cancer screening centre will continue this year too and is expected to function till the new Cancer Early Dtection Centre is completed.

- Providing additional facilities to Kuda Kusum Orphanage project completed last year.

- IDP relief is an area the Club will continue to extend support.

- Ethnic Harmony Project is also a project which the club intends carrying out for a length of time,
- Gift of Life Surgery will continue as long as the Gift of Life Foundation of India keeps offering this facility.

-Safe Bottle Lamp Project is another important area the Club will keep going back to, considering the large number of burn victims as a direct result of unsafe bottle lamps.

- Surol project has been carried out for several years and the Club will continue in the future too.

-Cancer Hospital B’day room is a very satisfying project and the Club has repeated this every month and will continue to do so.
